Our programs
Graduates must develop a strong foundation in the natural and social sciences and expertise in critical areas such as food, water, health and climate change. They are trained in important skill areas such as economic and GIS modeling, and taught to draw from interdisciplinary perspectives in science, policy and the process of decision making.
Drawing from cutting-edge research and practical work done at the Earth Institute, graduates of the sustainable development major and special concentration will be uniquely prepared to approach issues of sustainable development from all angles in the public, private and non-profit sectors.
The major, minor, and special concentration in Sustainable Development, along with the new major in Climate and Sustainability, are all based on the belief that students need training across different disciplines to become effective leaders who can tackle the complex challenges of sustainable development and climate action. The Office of Undergraduate Programs prepares students to take their first step toward addressing the broader challenges of sustainable development and climate and sustainability currently faced by our global community.
Students must first be accepted into Columbia College or the School of General Studies to be eligible to declare the Sustainable Development or Climate and Sustainability major. Prospective students should review the course requirements and schedule an appointment with the program administrators at [email protected] to discuss any questions regarding the requirements.
