Emerging Climate Leaders Policy Workshop

Join us for the Emerging Climate Leaders Policy Workshop, an Earth Institute event series designed to help high school students understand the history and process of US environmental policymaking, as well as their personal power to influence it. The workshop will take place throughout March in four virtual Saturday sessions held synchronously from 2:00 - 4:00 pm ET. Our keynote speaker is Michael Gerrard, Director of the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia Law School.

Agenda:

Saturday 3/6 , 2-4pm

  • Opening remarks
  • Keynote Speaker, Michael Gerrard, Director of the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia Law School
  • Breakout room challenge
  • Meet policy drafting groups

Saturday 3/13, 2-4pm

  • Expert Speaker, Fletcher Beaudoin, Director of the Sustainable Solutions Institute at Portland State University, Columbia SIPA Alumni
  • Stakeholder debate exercise
  • Group project brainstorming

Saturday 3/20. 2-4pm 

  • Presentation on reliable resources
  • Work on final project, bill analysis, in groups

Saturday 3/27, 2-4pm 

  • Create and practice group presentations
  • Groups present policy analysis to class

Students will be expected to find time during the week of 3/20-27 so they can work on their policy drafts with their small groups.

Registration is open to all high school students (grades 9-12) with an interest in environmental policy.
