The Sustainability Space is a series of virtual, discussion-based events for students studying sustainability at The Earth Institute, Columbia University. Hosted by faculty and student group leaders, these discussions will explore a variety of critical topics, ranging from energy to equity and more. On 9/29, George Sarrinikolaou, Director of the Office of Academic and Research Programs at the Earth Institute, hosts Stephanie M. Smith of the Baltimore City Department of Planning. They will discuss efforts to improve equity, including in the area of environmental health.
Stephanie M. Smith is an Assistant Director in the Baltimore City Department of Planning and a member of the Maryland Bar. She serves as the agency's Equity Officer and oversees the work of the Sustainability, Policy and Data Analysis and Food Policy divisions. A former congressional staffer and advocate for Earthjustice, Stephanie has experience on a wide array of environmental, public health, community development and social justice policy issues. Stephanie is a proud graduate of Hampton University (BA), University of Delaware (MA) and Howard University School of Law (JD). Stephanie is married to Calvin, a mother to two young sons and a friend of Baltimore. She resides with her family in Baltimore City's Middle East community.
