This virtual event will honor the 2020 RFK Human Rights Award Laureate, indigenous human rights defender and Munduruku leader Alessandra Korap Munduruku, for her work defending the culture, livelihoods, and rights of the Munduruku indigenous people in Brazil. A formal presentation of the award will be followed by a panel discussion on the challenges the Munduruku people, and the indigenous population in Brazil at large, are up against: including exploitation, degradation and invasion of their lands and territories, ensuring their right to be properly consulted regarding projects that affect their rights, and the threats to indigenous leaders and activists for their work, all amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that represents a particularly serious risk to them.
The award will be presented by Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights president Kerry Kennedy and the Hon. John Kerry, 68th United States Secretary of State.
